Almost a century ago the English writer Ella Noyes defined Casentino "a closed valley", due to
its geographical conformation. It is likely that the idea of closed, therefore reserved and
secret, has contributed to picture a personal image of Casentino in my mind, but with reference
to the natural, architectural and artistic treasures of this area. I see this part of
Tuscany as an old, non-showy "casket", but so full of precious things that it is impossible to
close it completely. Thus, from wherever you look at it, a "jewel" appears through the half-open
cover: the Castle of Poppi. But this is nothing but a sign, an invitation to approach. By putting
your eyes near the opening, you can catch a glimpse of other castles and suggestive landscape views.
But it is not enough, you need to snoop, to look carefully through in that "casket". Going back to
a medieval atmosphere, we can discover parishes, castles, characteristic villages, beautiful
squares and places of great spiritual value as Camaldoli, La Verna and Santa Maria del Sasso in
Bibbiena. There are also numerous, precious, pictorial art works, belonging generally to the late
medieval period, almost totally located inside churches. Ancient traditions, folk events and old
crafts are still present in the social life. All this is surrounded by a beautiful and nearly
uncontaminated nature as the chain of the Massiccio del Pratomagno and the National Park of the
Casentino Forests.
